1) What example is provided of why visual iconographies are so important?
visual iconographies : mise-en-scene,props, costimes, locations etc cinematograpahy 

2) What examples are provided of the importance of narrative in identifying genre?
the example it is provided of the timportance of narrative  in idnetifying genre


3) What is the difference between character representation in action movies and disaster movies? 
the difference between character representation - The disaster movie often places the heroic role within a group of people. They often have particular strengths which play a part in solving the problem through the collaboration of a group who works together. 


4) What are the different ways films can be categorised according to Bordwell? 
-Technical Process
- Style
- Series
- Audience
- Period or country
- Director/Star

5) List three ways genre is used by audiences.
They use their prior knowledge of the genre to anticipate whether or not they are likely to enjoy a text.
- They are able to compare a text through its shared characteristics with another.
- They also use their knowledge of genre to reject a text.


6) List three ways genre is used by institutions or producers.\
If a producer wants to produce a new sit com there are certain rules that must be followed.
- Attracting an audience. Some genres have a loyal fan base. People will try out a new sit com because its a new sitcom so this helps media producers minimise the potential for failure.
-Marketing Texts.

7) What film genre is used as an example of how genres evolve? What films and conventions are mentioned?
- Gangster genre.

SUPERHEROS FACTSHEET: 
1) List five films the factsheet discusses with regards to the Superhero genre.
  • Scott Pilgrim vs The World (2010) 
  • The Avengers and its franchise
  • Batman (3 Films since 2000;
  • Watchmen
  •  Sin City (2 Films since 2000)


2) What examples are provided of how the Superhero genre has reflected the changing values, ideologies and world events of the last 70 years?

WW2 began in 1939 and the US people saw it at first as a European issue and In the 1940s, Superman was shown needing to battle European bad-guys who threatened the peace and security of Metropolis.
The film offers a metaphor for the conflict the US found themselves in during the 00s. Wars had been fought in desert regions with the main prize being the control of oil - binary opposition of good and evil and like Batman Forever, it also deals with the duality of a hero being both ‘light’ and ‘dark’.

3) How can Schatz's theory of genre cycles be applied to the Superhero genre?
Innovation: superhero comics then being adapted to movies
Classical: good v bad binary opposition being repeated with other superhero movies
Parody: Batman (1966) was intentionally funny and camp and wouldn’t let its audience take the superhero too seriously - ironic tone
Deconstruction: Superman (1978) started a new cycle in the superhero genre with technology leading the innovation with special effects creating more realistic visual ‘miracles’.

GENRE ANALYSIS CASE STUDY: 
General 
1) Why did you choose the text you are analysing?
It is one of my favourite horror film s.
2) In what context did you encounter it?
It had appeared when I was browsing thought the horror genre.
3) What influence do you think this context might have had on your interpretation of the text?
I believe that this context made me believe that the film was going to be scary and it fufiled that.
4) To what genre did you initially assign the text?
Horror.
5) What is your experience of this genre?
It is my favourite genre as I love to be scared and it gives you a thrill.
6) What subject matter and basic themes is the text concerned with?
It has jump scares, supernatural creatures for examples ghosts and scary music.
7) How typical of the genre is this text in terms of content?
Very typical.
8) What expectations do you have about texts in this genre?
I expect all texts in this genre to be scary and when its not I don't really consider it a horror film as it does not meet the expectations that I had.
9) Have you found any formal generic labels for this particular text (where)?
Psychological horror.
10) What generic labels have others given the same text?
vampire movies (Blade 
• gothic horrors 
• ghost stories 
• the teen slasher 
• haunted-house movies
11) Which conventions of the genre do you recognize in the text?
Darkened places, distinct screaming, abandoned house ect...
12) To what extent does this text stretch the conventions of its genre?
It doesn't.
13) Where and why does the text depart from the conventions of the genre?
When the family is all happy and normal.
14) Which conventions seem more like those of a different genre (and which genre(s))?
15) What familiar motifs or images are used?
Light vs Dark ,  Good vs Evil  ect..

Mode of address
1) What sort of audience did you feel that the text was aimed at (and how typical was this of the genre)?
Teens, young adults and adults - I would say it would be typical as it would not be suitable for young children to watch it as it might traumatise them.
2) How does the text address you?
This text addresses me as a person who like to get scared. 
3) What sort of person does it assume you are?
A courageous and bold person
4) What assumptions seem to be made about your class, age, gender and ethnicity?
Personally, I would say it has nothing to do with class , gender and ethnicity however age does.
5) What interests does it assume you have?
Adventurous interests.
Relationship to other texts
1) What intertextual references are there in the text you are analysing (and to what other texts)?
Intertextuality is when a media product references another media text of some kind.
I think it sort of references romance a little bit as the couple fight against the evil to protect each other and their family. 
2) In terms of genre, which other texts does the text you are analysing resemble most closely?
The conjuring, Anabelle , Separation, Slumber and Demonic.
3) What key features are shared by these texts?
Supernatural beings and having to fight against them.  
4) What major differences do you notice between them?
They can have different conventions but still fit in the same genre for example whilst insidious is about ghosts (spiritual) , Annabelle is about a doll (physical).
